I wrote a short missive about my therapy for depression in response to a SlashDot article on research with mice entitled Ever-Happy Mouse Sheds Light on Depression.
I had to take another test: The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test
The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test is one of the many tests available on OKCupid.com. (Thanks to Brad for pointing out the lack of link.)
Joe Normal
26 % Nerd, 34% Geek, 8% Dork
For The Record:
A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored less than half in all three, earning you the title of: Joe Normal.
This is not to say that you don't have some Nerd, Geek or Dork inside of you--we all do, and you can see the percentages you have right above. This is just to say that none of those qualities stand out so much as to define you. Sure, you enjoy an episode of Star Trek now and again, and yeah, you kinda enjoyed a few classes back in the day. And, once in a while, you stumble while walking down the street even though there was nothing there to cause you to trip. But, for the most part, you look and act fairly typically, and aren't much of an outcast.
I'd say there's a fair chance someone asked you to take this test. In any event, fairly normal.
Congratulations!
It's true! I like tests!
Here're the results from the test I took on OkCupid! I didn't realize what was up with this site until the offer to take this test came up. There are a bunch more tests too.
This was the "Greek Mythology Personality Test". Give it a try for yourself!
Orpheus
33% Extroversion, 60% Intuition, 72% Emotiveness, 100% Perceptiveness
You are an artist, an aesthete, a sensitive, and someone who has never really let go of that childlike innocence. To you, all of life has a sense of wonder in it, and the story of Orpheus was written about someone just like you.
When the Argo passed the island of the Sirens, Orpheus played a song more beautiful than the Sirens to prevent the crew from becoming enticed. When his wife died, he ventured into the underworld to charm Hades but, in his naivete, he looked back becoming trapped there.
You can capture your unique world view and relate it to others with the skill of a master storyteller. Your sensitivity and creativity make you a treasure to the human race, but your thin-skinned nature and innocence can cause you a lot of disenchantment and pain. What's doubly unfortunate is that, if you try to lose those traits, you never will, and everyone will be able to tell that you're putting up an artificial shell to prevent yourself from being hurt.
Famous people like you: Hemingway, Shakespeare, Mr. Rogers, Melville, Nick Tosches
Stay clear of: Icarus, Hermes, Atlas
My post to CHUD
CHUD's got a contest for a selection of books from a new publisher named "Boom!". I was inspired and wrote the following for my entry:
Hey there. My full name is Burton Judson Lo and my mailing address is (at work) 5830 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, CA 92008.
I'm 39, so I've had lots of experience reading comics. I don't remember the very first book, but some of my earliest memories include reading a JLA book as a kid where Red Tornado was battling "T.O. Morrow" and I've used that mnemonic to remember how to spell that ever since. Red Tornado was the bomb, especially that costume and the image of his powers. Too bad he was short lived.
I was also enamored with Barry Allen's Flash and would draw him over and over in school. Between those two characters, I got my basic template of the human form.
I also remember the tabloid sizes comic reprints of Action Comics, and Shazam/Batman/Wonder Woman books. Then there were the $.60 100-page glue-bound comics that rocked!
Oh, yeah, I used to steal money from my mom's purse to buy comics. I don't know if she ever figured that out My mother threw away my comic books at one point, one of the lowest times of my life. That was one of the biggest pains of my parents divorcing, but I pretty soon after reconcile my stealing from her with her throwing those out.
[Big span of time without comics in my life. TMI.]
In the mid-90's I found Southern California Comics run by a guy named Jamie. I liked his style and his store and ended up revitalizing my comic collection of single issues. Gaiman's The Sandman helped there as well as eBay in my search for a complete original run of MiracleMan. A couple of years ago, I downsized my collection and started buying up TPBs. I also view some books online in .cbr form. That's about where I'm at today with collecting.
I talk about comics a fair amount with newbies and toss about books to people to turn them on to comics. I also get to Comic Con each year since I live in San Diego. Frankly, my proudest achievement, though, is turning my six-year-old daughter onto Godzilla. There's much happiness in that connection with her. :-)
The movies are doing a fair enough job in capturing the magic and I'm really happy to see how fully the characters and stories have infiltrated mainstream pop culture. I have to say, though, that Linklater's Scanner Darkly takes the cake for the art form in movies. I loved that movie.
Thanks for the chance to walk down memory lane. I hadn't thought about this stuff in forever, but I've heard good things about Boom! Comics.
DJ Sweet Beets is at it again!!!
Here's a letter from my friend, DJ Sweet Beets. If you can make it, go, if not, spread the word!
Hello Everybody! I am going to be playing records poolside again at the Lafayette Hotel on Sunday, August 20th from 1-6pm. It is a week and a half away and I wanted to invite all of you to come. I am even starting it a little later this time so all you people driving from up north will have plenty of time to make it. Last Sunday was so much fun and the people that work for the hotel were really pleased with the turn out so they asked me to come back. Now that I have been there I can tell you it is well worth the trip. There is a huge pool, a really nice secluded hot tub, a poolside lounge, a poolside BBQ that is going all afternoon (veggie options), cocktail waitresses (in case you don’t want to lose your seat in the sun), internet access for you workaholics, and a ton of GREAT MUSIC being played! Also, if you want you can take a walk around the hotel. You would be amazed at its history…haunted rooms, Bob Hope, ect. Well, you will have to see for yourself.
I hope you all can make it!
-Sweet Beets

Update
I'm a runner! Training's going well. Last four weekend runs on Saturday have been 6, 10, 11, and 12 miles respectively. And my skin's clearing up!
My R bike's getting maintenance work done, so you might notice a pallor on my skin since I haven't been riding. I'm looking forward to it being ready Wednesday or soon after.
Software licensing's a pain in the ass. It's quite a "paradigm shift" for me, though, where I'm very committed to being compliant considering my history.
Anybody wanna talk about their Higher Power? If so, leave a comment.
Anybody wanna share their definition of "dating"? Part 2) what's your definition of "sex"? My inquiring mind wants to know what the current "common sense" is regarding these questions.
Maybe I should look them up in the Farmer's Almanac...?
